Training and Licensure

The required education leading to chiropractic licensure in the state of California is extensive and takes more than 4 years following undergraduate study.

Chiropractic education is very similar to medical education during the first two years of study, but in years 3-5, chiropractic students focus their study on orthopedics, neurology, biomechanics, x-ray and adjusting techniques, while medical students intensify their training in pharmacology, minor surgery, etc.

For US licensure, in addition to completing the accredited chiropractic curriculum and more than 600 hours of supervised externship, students must pass a 4-part National board examination followed by the State board examination for the state in which they wish to practice.

After licensure, each DC (Doctor of Chiropractic) must complete annual continuing education seminars to maintain their license status.
