History of Chiropractic

In California, Chiropractic was officially recognized and licensed as a healthcare discipline in 1922, but the principles were actually developed in 1895 by Daniel David (D.D.) Palmer.  D.D. lived in Davenport, Iowa and worked as a magnetic healer.

In September 1985, Harvey Lillard came to see D.D. regarding a spinal injury he had suffered years prior, which left him mostly deaf.  D.D. theorized that since the spine had been injured, it was no longer capable of carrying nerve impulses to the ear.

He examined Mr. Lillard’s spine and found a vertebra in the spinal column which had shifted from its normal alignment.  He applied pressure to the misaligned area of the spine, and when the spine shifted position, Harvey Lillard’s hearing returned.

From this, Chiropractic was born.

It has been researched, developed, refined and licensed since the first adjustment took place, but the basic principles remain unchanged: Without interference and stress, the body has an inherent ability to heal itself naturally.

Today there are over 50,000 licensed Chiropractors in the US alone, and approximately 1 in 12 Americans sees a Chiropractor annually.

Chiropractic is now covered by most insurance plans and is a paid benefit under government programs such as Medicare.

Each year more people discover the benefits of chiropractic care. After all, it's been proven safe and effective for more than 100 years.
